The Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial stands on Madingley Road, just west of Cambridge. Many visitors come from far away, often to find a relative's name, and want somewhere quiet to eat before or after. The Old Crown, a thatched village pub in Girton, is about 4 miles away: around 10 to 15 minutes by car, according to Google Maps.

About the cemetery

The cemetery is cared for by the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC). According to the ABMC, it holds the graves of more than 3,800 American war dead of the Second World War, and more than 5,100 names are recorded on the Walls of the Missing. Most died in the Battle of the Atlantic or in the air war over north-west Europe. The memorial, with its chapel, and the visitor centre tell their story.

Visiting: hours and admission

  • Address: Madingley Road, Coton, Cambridge CB23 7PH.
  • Hours: 9am to 5pm every day, with last admission at 4:45pm. Closed on 25 December and 1 January.
  • Admission: free, with no need to book.
  • Relatives: when the cemetery is open, a staff member in the visitor building can answer questions and escort relatives to grave and memorial sites.

These details come from the ABMC and can change, so please check the ABMC's visitor page before you travel. The ABMC asks visitors to behave with respect during their visit.

Lunch or dinner afterwards in Girton

The Old Crown is a historic thatched pub at 89 High Street, Girton, CB3 0QD, with free on-site parking behind the pub, a step-free entrance and an accessible toilet. Our kitchen cooks Nepalese dishes, Indian favourites and British pub classics such as fish & chips, so there is something for everyone in your party. See the menu.

Kitchen hours: Monday: closed; Tuesday to Friday: 12:00 to 15:00 and 17:00 to 22:00; Saturday: 12:00 to 22:00; Sunday: 12:00 to 21:00. On weekdays the kitchen closes in the afternoon and reopens for dinner, so a morning visit fits well with lunch here, and an afternoon visit with an early dinner.
