The dining room at The Old Crown, Girton

Looking for vegetarian food near Cambridge? The Old Crown is a thatched village pub in Girton, just outside Cambridge, with a Nepalese kitchen that also cooks Indian favourites and pub classics. Our menu marks 41 dishes as vegetarian, so a vegetarian guest gets a real choice, not one token option, and the rest of the table can order whatever they like.

Nepalese vegetarian dishes

  • Veg momo: Nepalese steamed dumplings, handmade in our kitchen and served with chutney. Read more about our momo.
  • Special Veggie Tarkari: a Nepalese-style vegetarian semi-dry curry cooked with aromatic spices and herbs, from our chef's selection.
  • Gurkha Aalo: dry potato in Nepalese herbs.
  • Tadka Daal: lentils. Order it with rice and you have dal bhat.
  • Chilli Mogo: a spicy starter.
  • Nepalese Rice Pudding: kheer, to finish.

Paneer and vegetable curries

For something richer, try Paneer Saslick, soft cheese cooked in the tandoor oven and served on a sizzler with onion and peppers, or Chilli Paneer as a starter. Saag Paneer (spinach and cottage cheese), Matar Paneer (peas and cottage cheese) and Chana Masala (chickpeas) work as sides or as a meal with rice. Veg Korma, the vegetable curries in balti, jalfrezi, madras and other styles, and the Veggie Biryani are all marked vegetarian too.

To share

The Veg Grill brings onion bhaji, mogo, samosa and paneer together, and Samosa Chaat and Garlic Mushroom are good starters to pass round the table.

Pub classics, and vegan options

If you'd rather have pub food, the Veg / Vegan Burger & Chips is on the menu, along with Chowmein Veg and chips several ways. Some other dishes can be made vegan on request: tell us when you order and the team will tell you what the kitchen can do.

Allergies and spice

Spice levels can be adjusted, so ask for milder or hotter. If you have a food allergy, please tell us before ordering. Every care is taken, but traces of allergens may remain. See our allergen information, and the full menu for the vegetarian labels and prices.
